The roof lifts off and inside you can store all the above or leave off the roof and use it as holder for your pens and or brushes. I was pretty amazed at how many cards or coins the inside can hold as well as the little fenced yard.
I started by applying gesso to all the pieces and then a coat of white acrylic paint over it once the gesso was dry. Then I assembled and glued all the pieces together with white clear craft glue including the base. When the glue was dry I painted the house inside and out with red acrylic paint. While the paint was drying, I cut pieces of paper that I wanted to use for the inside and touched up my window frames, roof and picket fence with white paint where needed.
I used the "Tall House Cut outs" from Retro for windows on each side of the cottage and glued them on once the red paint was dry along with the window frames and the "Valentine Word Scroll" on the fence. For the roof, I decided to keep it white and added some German Victorian Rose Die Cuts I had in my personal stash since that gave it more of a cottage feel.
I added Tim Holtz Idea-ology Small Talk words over the Heart frame and on the inside of each wall. For finishing touches, I took a dry brush with white paint and dry brushed areas of the house to give it a little bit of a distressed look.
I liked the look of the vintage floral on the roof so I added some of the die cuts to the cottage. Red is my favorite color so I love that the cottage is perfect for Valentines Day by adding some Valentine touches that later can be removed and leaves you with an adorable red and white vintage looking cottage ready to hold all the things you love. Even Chocolate Kisses.
The little accessories I used for Valentines Day are Retro Cafe's 22 Vintage Valentine Paper Cuts, Standup Hearts and Martha Stewart's Premade Valentine Tags from Retro Cafe. I added the Vintage Valentine Paper Cuts to the Standup Hearts and the Valentine Tags.
I hope you enjoyed this post and when making one don't forget about the bottom of the cottage.. a great place to add one of your favorite quotes.
* Can you imagine what adorable villages these would make all lined up with art supplies. Now, you can also purchase just the houses without the fenced area too.
Be sure and pop back in and see what Cottage # 3 will look like!
